CALL FOR PAPERS

The aim of the conference is to convene scholars from a wide range of disciplines, interested, broadly speaking, in the rich and heterogeneous but thus yet to become better demarcated area of intersection of language/discourse and the political sphere (i.e. politics, both in its institutionalized and everyday dimensions). The general purpose is to explore and deepen ways of analyzing language as a political instrument, a political theme, and a political domain.

The special theme of the 2020 conference will be "The Brexit Effect. Critical Linguistic Insights into Prospects for European (Dis-)integration". We invite papers examining political and public discourses involving / dealing with the so-called ‘Brexit effect’ – its social, political, economic, cultural, etc., consequences – including newly evolving pro- and anti-EU positions and discourses in various European countries triggered by the Brexit decision and Brexit procedure.Apart from this special theme, the conference will address the following issues: 

•   the use of language in political rhetoric, advertising, media discourse, propaganda, persuasion, populism, etc.;

•   language and processes of ideological symbolization; including folk linguistic ideologies, normative use of language and language-based reproduction of ideologies;

•   language of the state, viz. language policies and language planning at various stages of the information flow, including the art of document design and press releases;

•   rhetoric of political systems and political changes;

•   language of political institutions;

•   linguistic thought (its development and directions) in the light of past and present

  political transformations;

•   politics in language pedagogy;

•   societal multilingualism, linguistic pluralism and linguistic minority policies;

•   language change and variation in political discourse: transformations at the lexical (terminology, neologisms, semantic shifts), morpho-syntactic, and text/discourse- pragmatic levels; language contact in the political domain: borrowing processes,

  style-shifting, code-mixing;

•   globalisation of political discourse: homogenisation of social and linguistic

  knowledge in the political milieu; hybridisation of generic/discursive structures, text types, and interactive strategies across languages and cultures; mulitimodality and unification patterns in political communication;

•   historical/diachronic transformations in political genres;

•   intertextuality and mediation in political communication;

•   axiological aspects of political discourses (valuation in political texts);

•   language attitude research: social attitudes to political discourse(s);

•   literary reflections of political communication;

•   translating/interpreting the language of politics;

•   directions in language training of politicians. 
  

We invite submissions for paper presentations. All submissions should be made in English. Papers will be allocated 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions. Anonymized abstracts of max. 350 words should be sent by email as a Word attachment to piotr.cap@uni.lodz.pl (Piotr Cap, Conference Chair) by 1 December 2019. Please include name, affiliation, email address and paper title in the body of the email. Abstracts will be accepted subject to review by an international scientific committee. Acceptance decisions will be communicated via email by 15 December 2019.

REGISTRATION

Registration fee covers conference materials, coffee breaks, lunches (on 14th, 15th, 16th May), and conference dinner (on 15th May). The fee must be paid by 1 March 2020.

Standard registration fee – 210 EUR (900 PLN)
Discount registration fee (students, PhD candidates, scholars from countries with serious currency restrictions (please check with organizer whether you qualify)) – 160 EUR (700 PLN)

Fees should be transferred to the account below with the reference “PL2020 Piotr Cap”. Fees can be paid in any major currency – EUR, USD, GBP etc., and Polish Zloty (PLN). Please instruct your bank to apply exchange rates as on the transfer date. Please make sure the amount transferred is clear of bank charges.

VENUE

The conference venue will be Centrum Szkoleniowo Konferencyjne Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (Conference Center of the University of Łódź; address: Kopcińskiego 16/18, 90-232 Łódź). 

ACCOMMODATION

Organizers have pre-reserved 70 rooms (at discount rate) in the hotel section of the Conference Center (the conference venue). Services and amenities include free buffet breakfast, parking, satellite TV, radio, telephone, refrigerator and free internet access. The Conference Center houses its own restaurant and bar and is located about 2 kilometers from the downtown of Łódź, which is famous for its variety of restaurants, bars and vibrant nightlife.

Discount rates for participants are as follows: 

single room	110 PLN (c. 25 EUR)
double room	140 PLN (c. 33 EUR, per room)
double room for 1 person	120 PLN (c. 27 EUR)

The pre-reservation expires on 1 March 2020 so early bookings by participants are strongly recommended. To book your room, please send an e-mail to cskul@uni.lodz.pl , writing “NDLP2020 Piotr Cap” in the subject line. Alternatively, bookings can be made by phone (+48 42 6355490) or fax (+48 42 6355460). The pre-reservation holds for 13-17 May 2020, in which period any number of nights can be booked. Payment can be made upon arrival, by cash or credit card.

Organizers regret that they cannot arrange accommodation outside the Center on your behalf. 

PROGRAM AND BOOK OF ABSTRACTS

An electronic version of the program will be e-mailed to registered participants by 15 April 2020. Hard copies of the program and book of abstracts will be included in your conference pack.

PUBLICATION

Conference papers will be considered for publication (printed and online) in the following international journals: International Review of Pragmatics (http://www.brill.nl/irp) and Lodz Papers in Pragmatics (http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/lpp).
